Work / James Smith Fencing

Moved to Hyvä, with pages 85% lighter.

James Smith Fencing sells fencing, gates, cladding, equestrian and agricultural supplies to trade and retail customers. INDEZ rebuilt its Magento store on Hyvä, to a new design, with a new checkout, and took it live on 27 October 2026.

The brief

Move James Smith Fencing off Magento's ageing Luma theme and onto Hyvä. Rebuild every page to the new Figma designs, replace the checkout, and make the store faster without losing a single feature that trade customers rely on.

1 · HYVÄ REDESIGN

Every page rebuilt, before and after.

The header, menu, homepage, category and search pages, product pages, basket, checkout and My Account were all rebuilt to the Figma designs. Drag the slider to compare the old Luma site with the new Hyvä one.

Before · LumaAfter · Hyvä

A mega menu

Each department opens into headed columns, so the whole range is in view at once. On phones it becomes a full-height drawer.

A clearer buy box

Options show their real names, a finance line shows the monthly price, and the quantity sits inside the Add to Basket button. A buy bar follows once the buy box scrolls away.

Products first

Category pages lead with products, with filters and sorting in one row and a stock pill on every tile.

Editable without a developer

The homepage and landing pages are built in the Hyvä CMS editor, with live text on banners instead of text baked into images.

2 · SPEED

A fraction of the code, on every page.

Hyvä replaces Luma's RequireJS, Knockout and jQuery with Alpine.js and Tailwind CSS. We measured the same pages on the old and new sites, then cut what was left.

Homepage
758 KB

down from 8.3 MB. The homepage now loads 40 files instead of 362.

Nothing jumps

Then we kept cutting

  • The font file went from 1.9 MB to 51 KB.
  • Reviews load as the customer scrolls near them.
  • Category tiles fetch labels and tier prices in one query, not one per tile.
  • A quote check that ran 92 database queries now runs 9.
  • Filter markup and the tracking script no longer load twice.

Lab measurements in desktop Chrome at 1440 × 900 and Safari's engine on an iPhone 17 screen: the old site on 22/10/2026, the new site on 26/10/2026, each page the median of three loads. Analytics tags were blocked on both.

After launch

3 · HYVÄ CHECKOUT

A guided checkout, and the right tools for Hyvä.

One Step Checkout gave way to Hyvä Checkout: Basket, Delivery, Payment, Confirmation. Extensions that only worked on Luma were replaced with ones built for Hyvä.

Payments grouped clearly

Pay in full by card, PayPal or Pay by Bank, finance with Klarna, or a business account with Billie. Card details go into Mollie's secure fields with no redirect.

Fewer distractions

The menu and footer leave the checkout, Loqate finds the address as it is typed, and every field has help text.

4 · TESTING & LAUNCH

Tested by the team, then launched.

Every change was tested on a staging copy of the store, with feedback tracked in BugHerd and signed off by JSF and INDEZ before go-live.
